Many UCanImport subscribers are now in the process of completing their first car importation from the United States. Congratulations!
In order to expedite your importation through US Customs and Border Protection, you must submit your import documentation to the export office at the border you wish to cross at least 72 hours in advance (three working days) of bringing your imported vehicle into Canada. You should also note that not all borders accept vehicle exports and that some require that you submit original documentation in person or by courier. We encourage you to verify the requirements at your selected crossing in advance.
To assist you, below is listing of many of the border crossings, as well as their unique export instructions. You can also check out the border crossing information listed on the CBP web site.

| Crossing Instructions
The documentation for all personal vehicle* exports via Idaho or Montana border crossings is processed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office in Whitlash, Montana. 72 hours before crossing any of the borders in Idaho or Montana, you must fax the following documents to the Whitlash office:
- The Vehicle Export Worksheet (click here to download). The owner or purchaser of the vehicle is responsible for the accuracy of the information provided. Failure to accurately fill out the work sheet or choosing not to use it may result in the inability to process your request. This could then result in you arriving at the border and not being permitted to export the vehicle and/or you receiving a fine or penalty.
- A copy (front and back) of the Vehicle Title, Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO) or certified copy of the same from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If you are bringing in a salvage vehicle, you must supply a copy of the Salvage Title.
If the title is NOT in your name, then on the Title the seller must sign as the seller, and your name must appear as the buyer. Partial submissions are not allowed.
Vehicles not requiring a Title - if you are exporting equipment that does not require a Title, you must complete the "No Title Required" Addendum (click here to download).
- A copy of the Bill of Sale.
- Loans/liens - by signing off their interest on the original Title, the lien holder indicates that the loan has been satisfied. If the lien has not been removed, but the lien holder does not object to export, then you must obtain from the lien holder a Letter of Permission on their company letterhead allowing you to export the vehicle from the United States. This Letter of Permission must bear an original signature of the lien holder and the date when it was signed.
In addition to the Letter of Permission, you must obtain a Certified Screen Print of the title information from the DMV (the title information, NOT the registration information), and it must have affixed to it an original signature of a DMV official. Faxes of the Letter of Permission and the Certified Screen Print are acceptable to initiate the clearance checks.
DO NOT submit your Recall Clearance Letter to the U.S. CBP office, as it is not required.
Assuming your documentation above is accurate and complete, a CBP official will begin the export checks which are completed within 72 hours of receipt of your fax. DO NOT contact the Whitlash office for confirmation, as it is extremely busy (processing up to 200 applications daily). A CBP official will instead contact you if there are any problems with your submission, so be sure to include your contact information. We suggest you supply the telephone numbers for your home, work and mobile phone, as well as an e-mail address if you have one. If the CBP official cannot reach you, the 72-hour export check will not begin.
Please note that the owner/agent of the vehicle must supply the ORIGINALS of all documents above in person at the Port where you are crossing at the time of export.
* (A "vehicle" is any "self-propelled" automobile, truck, tractor, bus , motorcycle, motor home, self-propelled agricultural machinery, self-propelled construction equipment, self-propelled special-use equipment, and anything self-propelled designed from running on land, but not on rail or water. |
